02 Challenge

A year-round, 4,000-show production where the automation, performer flying, and signature in-arena helicopter all have to work every night - and have to be safe to put crew and cast on.

03 What we did

Servicing, system upgrades, and control development for 5 performer flying rigs, an automated masking curtain system, and the cable-winched helicopter track. Plus harness training and after-hours call-out response.

04 Outcome

7 years partnered. 4,000+ shows. Every flight cue safe and show-ready.

TSA has always been there when we needed them, and even when we didn't. They've always come through.
01 The Problem

Year-round shows. Zero room for guesswork.

Outback Spectacular has been running for more than 19 years, and the systems that lift, fly, and reveal across that arena have evolved with it. By 2017, the production needed more than ad-hoc support. It needed a partner who could service the existing automation, take on planned upgrades, and answer the phone when something went sideways at 2 a.m.

Five performer flying rigs. An automated masking curtain system. A full-scale helicopter that flies the length of the arena on a cable-winch track. All of them load-bearing. All of them in front of audience. All of them carrying people.

The brief was clear: keep the spectacle alive, keep it documented, and keep the people on the rigs safe.

02 The Process

Service first. Partnership next.

Servicing and inspections (2017 onwards)

TSA's involvement started where every long partnership should - with the work. Routine servicing and inspections across the existing automation systems. Documentation done properly. Findings flagged before they became failures. That earned the trust to take on more.

ii
Performer flying system installation and upgrade at Australian Outback Spectacular

System upgrades and control development

What began as servicing grew into a full partnership. TSA now manages and services five performer flying rigs, an automated masking curtain system, and the cable-winched track system that flies a full-scale helicopter the length of the arena. The helicopter system also outputs live data to synchronise with projection elements in real time - physical and digital effects, locked together.

iii
Performer harness fit and emergency procedure walkthrough

Show-night response, performer training, harness checks

Year-round performances mean the work does not stop at annual servicing. TSA returns regularly for call-outs, harness checks, cable replacements, and performer training. One example: a 2 a.m. system lockout. TSA on-site, troubleshooting, automation restored in time for a private event the next morning.

New cast members get walked through every step - from harness fittings to emergency procedures - before they go in the air.

03 The Result

Seven years on. Still showing up.

The partnership between TSA and Australian Outback Spectacular continues to grow - built on open communication, respect for craft, and a shared interest in keeping iconic Australian storytelling on its feet.

The systems are refined. The performers are trained. The documentation is current. And when the show needs us at 2 a.m., we are there.
