Beetlejuice The Musical

02 Challenge

A touring musical where the automation, rigging and scenic all have to work as one show, load in and out season after season, and stay safe to put cast and crew on every night.

03 What we did

Designed, supplied and ran the complete package - single-console show control, 58 chain hoists with Hercules winching, lifting winches from 25 kg to 2500 kg, automated masking and a 30-plus element scenic build - with maintenance and on-site crew built in.

04 Outcome

One integrated package, engineered and kept show-ready across multiple international seasons.

01 The Problem

A touring show has to work anywhere. First time.

A commercial touring musical does not get a settling-in period. The automation, the rigging and the scenic all have to move together on cue, in a venue the production may only hold for a season, and then pack down and do it again in the next city.

Fifty-eight chain hoists. Deck tracks and pneumatic castor systems. Lifting winches from 25 kg to 2500 kg. Thirty-plus scenic elements on wagons that track across the stage. All of it designed for the purpose, all of it in front of an audience, all of it moving on cue.

The brief was clear: engineer one integrated package that works as a single show, document it so any competent crew can run it, and keep it safe and show-ready season after season.

02 The Process

One team. One integrated package.

i
TSA automation wagon build for Beetlejuice in the workshop

Engineered and supplied as one system

TSA designed and built the show as a single integrated system, not a set of separately-sourced parts. The automation package - deck tracks, pneumatic castor systems, variable-speed chain hoists and lifting winches from 25 kg to 2500 kg - was engineered to move with the chain-hoist rigging and the scenic build, and to pack down to tour. TSA own-brand drives sit alongside third-party drives in the same rack, so the whole system is ours to support.

ii

Run from a single Raynok console

One Raynok console runs the production from a single operating position, with closed-loop position feedback across the automated axes. Eight of the show's 58 hoists sit on the control network: variable-speed chain hoists tilt suspended trusses through the show, a compact servo hoist drives the automated show curtain, and a 2500 kg winch lifts an LED screen at 1.2 m/s. Every move is a repeatable cue, held to the millimetre.

iii
TSA road case built for the Beetlejuice touring package

Kept show-ready, season after season

The package ships on a maintained basis with the support built in: preventive maintenance, a 24-hour turnaround on essential faults, and 24/7 contact for the life of each season. TSA supplies the on-site production crew too - carpenter, rigger and automation programmer - across load-in, the run and load-out, so the show has its engineers in the building.

03 The Result

Built to tour. Built to last.

Beetlejuice runs as one package because it was engineered as one - the automation, the rigging and the scenic designed to move together and to travel. The drives are TSA's. The control network is TSA's. The crew that keep it running are TSA's. That is what integrated delivery buys a production: a single team accountable for the whole stage-engineering package, season after season.

It is the proof behind the pitch - TSA can carry the full stage-engineering scope of a marquee touring musical.
